How To Keep Track Of Your Goals

by Goal Setter on 02 Nov 2011 permalink
A goal must be assessable.
  • What is the contribution of this goal towards my overall welfare?
  • Is this goal competing with other goals for limited resources (time and money)?
  • Would I be bored, indifferent, happy or elated if I reached that goal?
  • How can I motivate myself as to how worthy this goal is to me?
  • Can I enlist the help of other people or is it a one person effort?

A goal must be measurable.
  • What yardstick would I use to tell if I am moving toward or away from my goal?
  • What would be the milestone to say that this goal has been reached?
  • Can I break down this goal into several steps or is it an all or nothing proposition?

A goal must be timed.
  • How long am I prepared to wait for this goal to be reached?
  • How can I identify a reasonable amount of time for this goal to be reached?
  • What if I am wrong in my estimation?
  • How can I develop the habit to spend time on this goal?
  • What am I prepared to let go in order to make the time?
  • Is there a deadline that needs to be met?

A goal must be financed.
  • Have I set aside a budget for this goal?
  • How can I figure out how much it is going to cost?
  • Are there deluxe, standard and no-frills ways to finance this goal?
  • Is the money required up front or in instalments?

A goal must be reviewed.
  • How often must I check if I am on track with this goal (daily, weekly, monthly)?
  • Is this goal proceeding ahead of time or lagging behind?
  • What obstacles have been identified?
  • Does this goal depend on the completion of another goal?
  • Can this goal run concurrently with other independent goals?
  • Do I need to find out more information? (Books, library, internet search, meeting people involved in this field).
  • Is something or someone aiming to sabotage my goal? (Fierce competition, jealous friend or family)

If nothing is budging
  • Is my method wrong?
  • Do I need to stop, think it over and redefine a new goal?
  • Have I lost interest? (It has become just a routine)
  • Have I been naive or ill-prepared?
  • Have I found role models of people who succeeded down that path before me?
  • Am I really focusing on the real issues?
  • Do I have an alternative plan?
  • Do I need to set a deadline to cut my losses or do I let the goal run out of puff?
