The marriage vowsby Goal Setter on 14 Dec 2011 permalink
In a world where all absolutes have been cast down and where everything is relative depending on how I feel - people are craving for some direction and stability. Women in particular are seeking security and safety. But where can they find it in a relationship where the rule is: "Get out of it what you want and if not just get out of there!" by contrast just glance at the famous text below:
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. (1 Cor 13:4-7 NIV) You can actually use it as marriage vows as in the movie A Walk to Remember by replacing "love" or "it" with your own name. Another form of marriage vows is this one: Do you (put your name here) take (put his name here) as your wedded lawful husband to love, to honour and to obey until death do us part ? I do. Do you (put your name here) take (put her name here) as your wedded lawful wife to love to honour and to cherish until death do us part ? I do. You will notice that the husband cherishes while the wife obeys. This is because men are wired to appreciate respect while the currency for women is unconditional love. (related article) Husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. (Eph 5:28 NIV) Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord. (Col 3:18 NIV) Sounds quite old fashioned and virtually impossible, doesn't it? Strangely enough prior generations didn't question it and by and large managed to make it work - so what's wrong with us? For centuries our common law and value system in our Judeo-Christian tradition has been based on the authority of the bible. In only the last 25 years have we rushed headlong to unbolt and remove all biblical references in our institutions and people start to wonder why we are left with nothing...
